Miami chosen as a finalist for 2014 Gay Games

Miami has been named one of the four finalist cities for the 2014 Gay Games. From the press release:

Groups from Miami (Florida), Cleveland (Ohio) Boston (Massachusetts), and Washington (D.C.), have submitted letters of intent to bid for the ninth edition of the Gay Games, to be held in 2014, officials announced at the close of the Federation of Gay Games (FGG) annual meeting in Cape Town, South Africa.

“Fourteen (14) cities worldwide had expressed interest in hosting the 2014 Gay Games,” said Darl Schaaff, co-chair of the Federation's Site Selection Committee. “We are very excited to now have four highly qualified bidders for the 2014 Gay Games who met the 20 October 2008 letter-of-intent deadline.”

Cleveland? Who wants to go to Cleveland?
The Gay Games is a huge event, drawing tens of thousands of people from all over the world to compete in sporting events, much like the Olympics--with events opened almost entirely co-ed, including male synchronized swimming (pictured). A few actual gay Olympians compete in each Games; and it's also a major social event as well, attracting as many spectators as athletes.

There are two major organizations that sponsor Olympics-style gay sporting events: OutGames was created to compete with the Gay Games, which may not have been the greatest idea: the last OutGames in Montreal ended up $5.3 million in debt. It's anyone's guess as to whether or not they'll come back from the dead.

A final decision will be made based on community support in each city (including tax breaks, presumably, so this now falls in the lap of the city government).

Unbeknownst to South Florida residents, trips to a local Whole Foods, Publix or Winn-Dixie may be funding the anti-gay, ultra-conservative Christian right.

Grass-roots activist organization Californians Against Hate is calling for a nationwide boycott of Bolthouse Farms products for its affiliation with the anti-gay movement, after shareholders donated to the anti-gay Proposition 8 in the state, which will repeal gay marriage if enacted. California legalized gay marriage earlier this year.

Michael Brandon: the Monster in jail

We don't usually promote stories about drug addicts, and how "tragic" their lives are, but in the case of adult entertainment superstar Michael Brandon, there is something to be learned: Brandon recently found himself in court (again) charged with selling
crystal, for which he will most likely spend several years in jail. Brandon has been battling the addiction for many years, and even achieved sobriety at several points in the saga, but he always fell back into using again. Life, even for a porn star, doesn't always have easy answers.

It should also be noted that crystal meth use is one of the main risk factors in HIV transmission—and it can also cause permanent brain damage.

Brandon, the "Jenna Jameson of gay porn," is a superstar in the adult entertainment field, for reasons involving certain "endowments" he possesses; but his notariety only highlights the depths to which he has fallen, as is detailed in the story. And like Michael's famous endowment, the article about him is long, so beware. But it's worth the read.

Gay foster parent ruling in Key West

In Key West, a family is celebrating a victory in what never should have been a battle in the first place - a Monroe County judge declared Florida’s ban on gay adoptions unconstitutional, paving the way for Wayne Larue Smith’s son to legally be able to call him “Dad.”

But Smith and his partner Daniel Skahen have been their son’s fathers for 7 years. The legal roadblocks stemmed from Florida’s ban gay adoptions, a rule purported to preserve families that, in actuality, only serves to hurt the children who need parents most.

We reported on the initial overturning of the ban last week, before the courts had released Smith’s and Skahen’s names. Since then, the Miami Herald has taken a closer look at the family, including reports on the obvious, have-already-been-stated-and-proven evidence that gay parents are “just as good” as hetero ones.

The new ruling prompted us to revisit the landmark 1997 ruling in New Jersey that set the precedent for allowing gay couples to adopt. While we were snooping around, we found this analysis by religioustolerance.org, a GLBT-inclusive religious organization whose mission is to untangle the truth and doublespeak so frequently employed by those who tout policies purported to preserve the integrity of families, but which actually only serve to keep children homeless. Their report is fascinating, but also sparks unease, when you realize that in a decade…not much has changed. Despite a body of statistical evidence to the contrary, including now 10 years worth of case studies, the same old panicky false arguments against gay adoption are still being employed.

Scott Netwon has announced he will run for re-election as Mayor of Wilton Manors, Fla.

He had previously not entered the mayoral race because he ran for election in the State House of Representatives, in District 92, which includes Wilton Manors, as well as areas of other such cities as Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach. However, he did not win the Democratic Primary in his district, coming in behind Gwendolyn Clark-Reed.

However, now that the State House election has ended for Newton, he has changed his position and will seek re-election of the job he has held since 2004.

Rainbow flags illegal in Miami Beach--but not for long

In a move that will undoubtedly rock the South Florida universe, Miami Beach city commissioners are prepared to rule on the legality of displaying rainbow flags in public.

Rainbow flags cannot be flown outside any businesses or homes in Miami Beach, because of a city code restricting "pennants, banners, streamers, flags and flagpoles." Only flags that represent actual countries are allowed. No word on the legalities surrounding my Brazilian next door neighbor, who uses his country's flag as curtains.

City commissioners, led by fearless Mayor Matti Bower, are concerned about the loss of gay business in Miami Beach. By allowing symbols of gay pride in public, they hope to welcome back the crowds that once lined the nightclubs and shops in town. And waving gay flags in everyone's faces is the first step, apparently.

The new law that allows rainbow flags is up for vote on September 10. If city commissioners vote in favor of the new law (and they are expected to pass it unanimously), rainbow flags will be the only flags added to the list what is allowed. So no bear flags, leather flags, etc. But these things come in baby steps, baby steps.

Several people have asked me what I speak on when I do these college programs: enerally, I speak on three main topics: (1) "Coming Out," issues, (2) HIV education, and (3) general New Student Orientation. #2 is a result of my former job with the health department, working as an HIV counselor; #1 is a snap, as my "coming out" story involved going on a TV show.

But #3 is tough.

One day I found a letter from a mother to a daughter--someone printed it out and left it for trash, and I grabbed it when I needed a scrap piece of paper. Luckily I turned it over and glanced at what I was writing on. Within a matter of two pages, this mother conveyed what every college kid needs to hear, much more poignantly and effectively than I could ever conceive. From there, my New Student Orientation lecture was born. I've edited it down, taken out all the personal references and inside-jokes; part of the letter is here:

Dear ____,

This is the moment I looked forward to all my life. However it is also the moment I fear: seeing my beautiful little baby move on and live her own life. My job is done--I have given you wings to fly and I am proud of your flight. You have helped me become the woman I am as we grew together.

Remember, be safe. Be with another girl in the room if you are going to hang out with boys in your room, or in his room. If you must and you are alone, keep the door open. And if you are alone in your room, it is okay to them they cannot come in.

Do not accept drinks from anyone. Get them yourself. Don't leave your drink and come back to it.

You have only one body; you have only one soul. Take care of it.

If someday you decide this school is not for you and you do not know what you want, it is okay. Be proud that you found out. Make your life's decision based on what is true for you and not what is true for me or your dad. And your room will always be available for you when you want to go home for a visit, for a homesick fix, for a good-cry-break-up fix, for the holidays. And remember to IM me for money. I'm sure I don't have to tell you that part.

I remember your first day in school. My heart was broken. I could not leave school. Your teacher finally asked if I wanted to volunteer.

I remember your first flight alone on a plane. It was nerve-wracking. I must have looked at the clock more than a hundred times counting the minutes until you were picked up at the airport.

I remember when I first left you with a babysitter to go to work. I'd come home for lunch just to see you. And I remember the first time you didn't come running to me. That brought tears to my eyes.

Nobody told me how much harder it is to let go of you when you go off to college. I feel like I am starting all over again, but this time I am giving you away. I know, however, you will be just great. No matter where you are.

I hope you have your TiVos ready. We need to discuss a few things about American Idol.

1) They obviously wanted Jordin to win, when they picked that song. It's like Season 1 all over again, with poor Justin Guarini trying to belt out A Moment Like This. The whole thing is Season 1...awkward big-boned girl who sings loud vs. cute guy with a boy-band voice who dances well and has a big smile and weird hair.

2) If/when Jordin wins, she'll make a really good album, I promise. Someome just needs to tell her what to do.

3) If Paula tripped on her dog, when she fell why didn't she hurt her hands?

4) If you didn't get the same interview where you live: here in Miami there was a bit with Anthony Federov, from seasons ago (remember the blonde skinny guy?). Apparently he's on Broadway in The Fantasticks. Great great show, and I'm sure he's fab in it.

Okay, TiVo-related business:

5) Go to Jordin singing that final song, when they cut to the audience and show Chris Richardson, Phil Stacey, and Melinda Doolittle listening. Look at the expression on Melinda's face. I cannot believe that bitch is up there instead of me. Vicious.

6) Blake has the biggest bubble-butt in Idol history. Seriously, look at his 2nd song. His waistband literally doesn't touch his back, because his pants are just hanging off his butt. And NOTICE, IN SONG 3, he has the front of his shirt out--but the back is tucked in. He's giving it a clear view. Goin' for the gay vote, methinks.

Open Letter To Costco

I have to be honest, I have been to the Costco in North Miami Beach twice. Both times, I have left upset and embarrassed by how rude the employees treated me.

I have been shopping at Costco for years with my family's and friends' memberships, and was happy to finally get my own when I moved to Miami. But I really don't plan on going back anymore.

I was literally yelled at--no exaggeration, yelled at--when I was walking down the aisle and the store was ready to close. It was right at 8:30, the normal time. So I got into line to check out, but realized I dropped my membership card several aisles back when I was trying to pick up a large box. So when I ran back to look for it--and I actually ran, I knew the employees were ready to close--I was then yelled at again to stop shopping, by some guy with a nasty look on his face. So I picked up my ID where I dropped it and quietly asked him to stop yelling at me.

I am a big guy, I'm not easily intimidated. But on both occasions I've been in your store, your employees really have shouted at me, my friends, and other people around me. We just stand there, we don't argue back as it would probably make things get ugly.

I worked at Nordstrom for years, and we would never (a) discourage someone from spending money in our store, nor would we (b) speak to someone with so much as a raised voice. We would be fired immediately if we did. And while a warehouse like Costco is not necessarily where should expect to receive white-glove customer service, it's still a place of business that is dependent on making customers happy.

I have no idea what the management is like at Costco at that store. But I'd be surprised to know that this treatment is company policy. I've received excellent service at other locations--which is the reason I shop at Cosco and not Sam's. I have also received good customer service at other stores in Miami, so the argument that "this is the way things are in Miami" doesn't work.

Please, for the sake of doing the right thing, you have got to get control of your employees. There's no reason for someone to get into a fight because some employee is having a bad day and doesn't like the position of someone's shopping cart or something silly.

Open Letter To Starbucks

I have been to the various Starbucks locations in Miami Beach (three on Lincoln Road), and each time I order the Iced Non-Fat Green Tea Latte. Every time I get it, the barista doesn't mix it very well and the powder sits at the bottom of the cup and turns to sludge. And every time, I take off the lid and mix it properly.

Today the barista said "I'm sorry, I mixed it the best I could" when she handed it to me. Then when I took off the lid to mix it, she tried to take it from me to mix it again--to which I said "If you've already tried your best, why are you trying to take it again?" It was rude but I've run out of polite things to say after dealing with this every day.

There is no reason there should be any complications in making a glass of tea.

It costs almost $4. I bought it because it's tasty. But I don't go in anymore because I can't handle dealing with people who are stumped by the process of correctly making a glass of tea. It's so pathetic. I just go get Cuban coffee next door, for $1.75. It's also delicious.

Schuyler is the 5 year old daughter of Julie and Rob Rummel-Hudson. Rob has run an online journal currently called Darn Tootin (its been called different things in the past)

Rob is one of the best online journal writers/bloggers there is. I said it. I meant it. I did say one of the best so yeah you can argue with me about #1 but if you were to make a list, I'd be very surprised that you could find 20 that are better without discovering some bias such a disdain for smart assery or a disdain for liberals or some such ilk.

Rob's daughter Schuyler has a disease called Congenital Bilateral Perisylvian Syndrome. . Yeah that's a mouthful and not in a good way like a Monster Thick Burger

One of her most noticeable and frustrating symptoms from this syndrome is that she can't talk. She is learning sign language but it turns out that there are machines that aid people who can't talk called an augmentative speech device. There has been a lot of conflict and drama between Schuyler's family and her school regarding getting her one. So Rob has set up this fund to buy the machine himself.

This machine would help her communicate with everyone, not just people who understand sign language. Since she can hear, she would be able to utilize the machine and know she is using it correctly.

SO yeah. Give to Schuyler's fund.

One of the main ideas being tossed around is that every week we will pick a day and a random blog--Friday at Funnsylvania, for example. When the time is nigh, we will jointly go over to the site and crash his or her comments board, talking about whatever we want to talk about on it. When the day is over, we all just leave. Think of it like an internet flashmob.

Another idea is that we can succumb to the forces of evil and annoy bloggers or sites we don't like. I can think of several lame political blogs that would be ripe for this. Think of it like the movie You Got Served.

Instead of being solitary dots along the terrain, why don't we connect them and loosely unify. It will be good promotion for your blog if you have one and it will give you something fun to do at work besides work.

Alliance of Power also looks great on college applications.
